Is there a type of camera or light sensor that can find the position of a flashing light?

Last year I participated in robocup 2009 Graz junior soccer. There we used nearly 18 phototransistors all around the robot to detect the infrared emitted from the ball and then follow the ball.you can do sobecause all sources of light emmit infrared.
